Sign now: one week left before pesticides stay indefinitely
On 16 December, the EU Commission will propose to water down laws that control the use of pesticides. This means even more widespread toxic chemicals in our food, our water, and our air.
The EU is considering removing renewal deadlines for most pesticides. That means chemicals could remain on the market forever. Yes, you read that right. These “Indefinite approvals” put our food, water, farmers, and ecosystems at serious risk. We have countless examples of why that is a bad idea.
Take chlorpyrifos, for example. It was authorised and used for decades until its full damage potential was understood. Independent research has shown later that chlorpyrifos impairs children’s brain development and causes neurological harm. The EU finally banned it in 2020 after years of accumulating scientific evidence.
If the EU goes ahead with indefinite approvals, chemicals like chlorpyrifos could remain in use indefinitely, even when new evidence shows they could harm us and nature.
